Fear of flying (aviophobia) is an intense, irrational fear of air travel — take-off, turbulence, or the feeling of being trapped. It's one of the most common specific phobias, and also one of the fastest to respond to hypnotherapy and NLP.
How It Shows Up
- Panic at the thought of booking a flight
- Avoiding holidays, weddings & work travel abroad
- Racing heart, sweating, nausea at take-off
- Feeling trapped, needing an exit row
- Scanning for every noise & turbulence
- Drinking heavily just to get on the plane
- Relief only when the plane lands
Why It Happens
Fear of flying (aviophobia) is a protective response that got stuck — your brain learned to associate flying with danger, even though flying is statistically the safest form of transport. The fear lives in the subconscious — exactly where hypnotherapy and NLP work best. Most people fly completely calmly after just 2–3 sessions.

Fear of flying responds exceptionally well to Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques. These are the specific processes we use to rewire the fear response — gently, safely, and permanently.
Rewind Technique (Dissociation)
The cornerstone of phobia treatment. You observe the memory of the original sensitising event from a safe, detached position — like watching it on a cinema screen. This allows the brain to reprocess the memory without re-living the emotion. The event stays in your memory, but the emotional charge is permanently removed. You never have to describe details you're not comfortable sharing.
Reframing (Content Reframe)
We change the meaning your brain attaches to bodily sensations. A tummy twinge currently means "danger — I'm going to be sick." We reframe it to "normal digestion — my body is fine." Same sensation, completely different response. This breaks the panic spiral at its very first trigger.
Anchoring (Resource Anchoring)
We build a powerful "calm anchor" — a simple physical trigger (like pressing your thumb and finger together) that instantly brings back a feeling of deep calm. You can fire it anytime: before eating out, on a journey, in a crowded place. It's a tool you keep for life.
Parts Integration (Six-Step Reframe)
Fear of flying often involves a 'protective part' that's trying to keep you safe — it's just going about it the wrong way. We communicate with that part, understand its positive intention, and help it find better, more helpful ways to protect you. The part stops fighting you and starts working with you.
Future Pacing
We mentally rehearse future situations (eating out, travelling, being around unwell people) with the new calm response already in place. Your brain learns the new pattern so thoroughly that when the real situation arrives, calm is your automatic default — no effort required.
Your Journey to Freedom
Session 1 — Free Consultation
A relaxed, no-obligation chat. We explore how fear of flying affects your life, explain exactly how the NLP processes work, and answer all your questions. You'll receive a complimentary relaxation recording. No pressure, no commitment.
Sessions 2–4 — Rewind & Reframe
The core work. We use the Rewind Technique to release the original sensitising memory, then reframe the meaning of bodily sensations. Most clients feel a significant shift by session 3 — situations that used to terrify them start feeling neutral.
Sessions 4–6 — Anchors & Integration
We build your calm anchor, do parts integration, and future-pace all the situations you've been avoiding. By now, most clients are eating out, travelling, and living normally again — the fear is quiet, not driving decisions.
After — Lifelong Tools
You leave with self-hypnosis and anchoring techniques you can use anytime, for life. If the fear ever whispers again, you have the tools to quiet it immediately. Most clients never need further sessions.
