When a small fear starts to feel much bigger
Spider phobia, also called arachnophobia, is more than simply disliking spiders. For some people, seeing a spider, noticing a web or even imagining an encounter can prompt a strong fear response.
You might find yourself checking rooms, avoiding sheds or gardens, asking someone else to remove spiders, or feeling anxious about opening windows. These reactions can be exhausting, especially when you know the fear feels out of proportion but still cannot easily switch it off.
There is no judgement here. We can start with what you would like to feel able to do differently.
What might spider phobia feel like?
- A racing heart, shaking, nausea or a sudden urge to escape
- Feeling on alert in rooms, gardens or unfamiliar places
- Avoiding activities because a spider might be present
- Distressing thoughts or images of spiders
- Relying on reassurance or repeated checking
These experiences vary from person to person; they do not, by themselves, establish a diagnosis.
What would feeling freer look like for you?
More comfort at home
Feel less compelled to check corners, avoid particular rooms or ask others to investigate every unexpected movement.
More enjoyment outdoors
Reconnect with gardens, walks, camping or time in nature without fear dominating your decisions.
More choice in the moment
Develop ways to respond thoughtfully, rather than feeling that panic or avoidance must decide what happens next.
Hypnotherapy, NLP and practical support
As a clinical hypnotherapist, I use a collaborative, solution-focused approach. We'll discuss your experiences, your goals and which methods are suitable for you. Treatment is never about forcing you to confront something before you are ready.
Clinical hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy can offer a calm, focused setting in which to practise relaxation, build confidence and rehearse preferred responses. It may be used as a complementary part of an individual plan. Research on hypnosis specifically for spider phobia is limited, so I do not present it as a guaranteed cure or a substitute for established phobia treatments.
NLP-informed techniques
Where appropriate, I may draw on NLP techniques such as reframing, imagery, anchoring and future pacing to help you explore different responses. NLP has a limited evidence base for treating specific phobias, and I will explain its role transparently rather than claim it is independently proven to remove arachnophobia.
Evidence-based phobia work
CBT and carefully planned, gradual exposure are established approaches for specific phobias. Where suitable, we can discuss these methods, agree manageable steps and consider referral to a CBT specialist if that would better meet your needs.
Small steps, taken at your pace
Progress does not have to begin with a spider. We start with a conversation about what you are experiencing and what you hope will change. Together, we can agree a plan that respects your boundaries.

Spider phobia: frequently asked questions
Can hypnotherapy help with a fear of spiders?
Some people find hypnotherapy useful for relaxation, confidence and mental rehearsal. Evidence specifically supporting hypnosis as a stand-alone treatment for spider phobia is limited. I will discuss whether it is suitable for you and explain other established options.
Do you use NLP for arachnophobia?
Yes. Where appropriate, I may use NLP-informed techniques such as reframing, imagery or future pacing alongside other therapeutic work. NLP is not an established stand-alone treatment for spider phobia, and we will discuss its limitations.
Will I have to look at a spider during the first appointment?
No. Our first conversation is about understanding your concerns and goals. Any later exposure-based work would be discussed and agreed in advance.
What is the most established treatment for spider phobia?
CBT, particularly gradual exposure-based approaches, has an established evidence base for specific phobias. We can discuss whether this is appropriate and whether specialist CBT support would be helpful.
Can I have spider phobia therapy online?
Online appointments are available across the UK where clinically appropriate. We will discuss whether online sessions suit your circumstances and the approach being considered.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on your needs, goals and the therapeutic approach. We can review progress together; I do not promise a fixed number of sessions or guaranteed results.
Is spider phobia common?
Fear of spiders is a familiar experience, although the intensity and effect on daily life vary considerably. You do not need to feel embarrassed about asking for support.
Can you help if my child is frightened of spiders?
We can discuss your child's age, needs and circumstances during the initial consultation. If another service or specialist approach is more appropriate, I will say so.
More calm. More confidence. More freedom.
You do not have to work everything out before getting in touch. A free initial consultation is an opportunity to explore your concerns and find out what support might look like.
