Understanding aviophobia

When the thought of flying feels overwhelming

For some people, anxiety begins long before they reach the airport. Others find that particular moments of the journey feel especially difficult.

Before booking

Anticipating a flight can lead to worry, sleeplessness or postponing travel plans.

At the airport

Security, queues, crowds and boarding can bring a sense of uncertainty or loss of control.

During the flight

Take-off, turbulence, unfamiliar sounds or feeling unable to leave can trigger intense reactions.

Afterwards

A difficult experience can make the next journey seem even more challenging, reinforcing avoidance.

Whatever flying means to you, there is no need to feel embarrassed by your reaction. We can explore your experience without judgement.

Understanding the fear response

Fear doesn't always follow logic.

You may know that many people fly safely every day, while your mind and body still respond as though there is immediate danger.

A fear of flying can relate to different concerns: turbulence, enclosed spaces, heights, worries about safety, a previous experience, or the feeling that you are not in control.

Sometimes several concerns overlap. Understanding your own triggers can help us discuss what sort of support might be appropriate.

What is aviophobia?

Aviophobia is a term commonly used for an intense fear of flying. People can experience anxiety in anticipation of a flight, during the journey, or both.

Physical responses may include racing thoughts, tension, sweating or a rapid heartbeat. Symptoms deserve individual assessment; they are not a diagnosis on their own.

Anticipation

Worry starts days or weeks before travel.

Uncertainty

Unexpected sounds or movement feel difficult to interpret.

Loss of control

Being a passenger can feel unsettling.

Avoidance

Not flying may bring short-term relief but limit future choices.

A collaborative approach

Support built around your experience

Our conversations begin with understanding what flying means to you and what you'd like to feel more able to do.

What my practice can offer

Depending on suitability, I may draw on Solution Focused conversations, hypnotherapy, relaxation and guided imagery to explore useful coping strategies and realistic goals.

We'll talk through the proposed methods, their limitations and whether a different option might suit you better.

Understanding your options

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), including planned exposure-based approaches, has an established evidence base for specific phobias. This is important context when choosing support.

Hypnotherapy and NLP approaches should not be presented as having the same level of evidence as exposure-focused CBT. I can discuss the approaches I use and signpost appropriately.

No technique comes with a guarantee of overcoming a phobia or of a particular number of appointments.

Frequently asked questions

Will I have to go on a flight during appointments?

No. Taking a real flight is not a requirement of a hypnotherapy appointment. We will discuss suitable options and their evidence bases.

Can sessions take place online?

Online appointments may be available where suitable. We can discuss practical arrangements in your initial consultation.

What if turbulence is my main worry?

We can explore which aspects of turbulence feel difficult and discuss potential coping strategies and, where appropriate, evidence-based treatment options.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies. Any proposed plan will take account of your circumstances, and we will review progress rather than promising a fixed outcome.

Can I ask about a previous frightening flight?

Yes. You can talk about as much or as little detail as is comfortable. If trauma-related symptoms are significant, specialist assessment or referral may be appropriate.

Can children and teenagers receive support?

Enquiries about younger people can be discussed individually, including age, suitability, parental involvement and safeguarding.
