Understanding what has changed

There may be more going on than a lack of willpower.

You might remember a time when getting things done felt easier. Now, even starting can take more energy than you expect.

Perhaps plans are made and then put aside. Perhaps your confidence has dropped after a difficult experience, or you're finding it hard to see the point of things you used to enjoy. You might be managing work and family on the outside while quietly feeling stuck on the inside.

Low motivation is not a character flaw. Stress, uncertainty, poor sleep, low mood and changes in circumstances can all influence how we feel and what we do. The first step is to understand your experience, rather than judge it.

What brings people here

When momentum slips, it can show up in different ways.

You do not need to fit a particular description to ask for support. These are some common experiences we can explore together.

01 / GETTING STARTED

Putting things off

Knowing a task matters, but finding reasons to delay it until it becomes an even bigger weight.

02 / SELF-BELIEF

Questioning yourself

Doubting your ability, replaying setbacks or assuming that others cope better than you do.

03 / ENERGY

Feeling mentally drained

Giving most of your energy to getting through the day, with little left for yourself.

04 / DIRECTION

Losing your sense of purpose

Finding it difficult to connect with goals, routines or activities that once felt worthwhile.

A different starting point

We won't ask you to think positively about everything.

Realistic optimism is about noticing possibilities while recognising that some days are genuinely difficult.

The work is collaborative. Rather than demanding a dramatic change of attitude, we consider what would make a little difference in the circumstances you are living with now.

  • Lower the starting line. Find actions small enough to feel approachable.
  • Notice what helps. Look for times when things have felt even slightly easier.
  • Work with, not against, yourself. Make room for rest, boundaries and realistic expectations.
  • Build from experience. Let useful actions provide information for the next step.
The therapeutic approach

Solution focused. Practical. Personal.

Different people need different kinds of support. These approaches may be used together or individually, depending on your goals and what feels suitable.

01 / SOLUTION FOCUSED

Conversations that look ahead

We explore what you would like to be different, the strengths you already have and what a realistic next step might look like. The focus is on understanding what helps, without dismissing the challenges.

02 / HYPNOSIS

Space to settle and reflect

Hypnosis can be used as an optional relaxation-based element of our work, alongside supportive suggestions and imagery. You remain in control, and hypnosis is never presented as a shortcut or a guaranteed result.

03 / NLP & CBT-INFORMED

Practical ways to shift perspective

Selected NLP-informed exercises and CBT-informed ideas may help you examine self-talk, expectations and habits. These are used as supportive tools, not as a claim to provide a separate specialist CBT programme.

What working together can involve

A straightforward process, without a fixed formula.

We start with what is happening for you, not a predetermined number of sessions or a promise of instant motivation.

01 — UNDERSTAND

Find out what matters

We talk about where motivation has become difficult, what you would like to regain and how life could feel different.

02 — EXPLORE

Work with the obstacles

We look at patterns such as avoidance, unhelpful expectations, stress or confidence difficulties, using appropriate tools where helpful.

03 — APPLY

Make the next step usable

We identify manageable actions and reflect on what you notice, adjusting the approach to fit your circumstances.

Where this may feel relevant

The everyday situations that can lose their spark.

Motivation difficulties do not only affect ambitions. Sometimes they change the ordinary parts of life as well.

Work and personal projects

You've got ideas, plans or responsibilities, but it has become increasingly hard to begin, focus or follow through. We can explore a more workable relationship with goals and expectations.

Confidence after a setback

An experience has unsettled your belief in yourself. You want to rebuild confidence without feeling pushed to pretend the experience did not matter.

Routines and self-care

Sleep, movement, interests or everyday habits have slipped. We can look at smaller, more realistic ways of making room for them again.

Changes in direction

You're questioning what comes next or what matters now. A structured conversation can offer space to explore decisions and priorities.

A useful distinction

The goal isn't to become someone who never loses motivation. It's to find ways of moving forward when motivation comes and goes.

Working with Gary Smith

Support that starts with a conversation.

I'm Gary, a psychotherapist and Solution Focused Hypnotherapist based in Swindon.

My approach brings together Solution Focused conversations and hypnotherapy, with NLP-informed and CBT-informed ideas where appropriate. I aim to make sessions collaborative, grounded and relevant to what you are experiencing rather than following a rigid script.

If low motivation is affecting your life, we can discuss what is happening and whether this way of working is a good fit. There is no expectation that you arrive knowing what you want to say or how to solve it.

When additional support matters: persistent loss of interest, pronounced fatigue, low mood or a marked change in your day-to-day functioning can sometimes indicate a mental or physical health concern. If this describes you, please speak with your GP or another qualified healthcare professional. Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for appropriate medical assessment or treatment.

Common questions

Questions about motivation and confidence.

Can hypnotherapy help with low motivation?
Hypnotherapy can be explored as part of a broader, practical approach to confidence, relaxation and behaviour change. Responses vary, and it is not a guaranteed way to increase motivation or replace the steps you take in everyday life.
Is low motivation just a lack of willpower?
Not necessarily. Motivation can be affected by stress, low mood, exhaustion, uncertainty, sleep and other circumstances. Understanding what is happening is often more constructive than blaming yourself.
What if I struggle with procrastination?
We can look at what happens before you put something off, including worries, perfectionism, overwhelm or unclear goals. The aim is to find practical steps that feel more manageable.
Do you use NLP and CBT techniques?
I use selected NLP-informed techniques and CBT-informed ideas where appropriate alongside Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. These are described as supportive tools, not as a separate specialist CBT treatment programme.
Will I have to be hypnotised?
No. Hypnosis is optional. We can discuss what it involves and whether it suits your preferences and goals during the consultation.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number that suits everyone. This depends on what you want help with, your circumstances and how the work develops. We can review the approach together as we go.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. Sessions are available in person in Swindon and online across the UK where appropriate, with a free initial consultation to discuss your needs.
What if low motivation is linked to depression or another health problem?
If you have persistent low mood, loss of interest, significant fatigue or other concerning symptoms, please seek advice from your GP or an appropriate healthcare professional. Hypnotherapy should not replace any assessment or treatment you may need.
Begin where you are

We can start with a conversation, not a commitment to change everything.

If motivation has slipped or confidence feels harder to access, a free consultation offers a straightforward opportunity to talk about what you would like to be different and whether this approach is right for you.
