A private, no-obligation conversation · Swindon in person · UK-wide online where suitable
You can be managing life and still feel overwhelmed by it.
There is a difference between getting everything done and feeling able to switch off.
Perhaps the day begins with a mental to-do list before you are out of bed. Perhaps you are carrying pressure from work into your evenings, finding it harder to concentrate, or feeling less patient with the people who matter most.
Stress is not a personal failing. And it does not always mean you need to change everything. Sometimes the most useful place to begin is with a clearer understanding of your own patterns and a few realistic choices.
It rarely looks the same for two people.
You do not need to wait until you feel completely exhausted to have a conversation about support.
A mind that will not switch off
Replaying conversations, anticipating tomorrow's problems or feeling unable to settle even when the day is done.
Pressure at work or home
Balancing deadlines, caring, family responsibilities or uncertainty, while feeling there is very little space left for you.
Less patience, less enjoyment
Becoming more irritable, easily distracted or disconnected from things that would usually bring pleasure or perspective.
Sleep and physical tension
Feeling tired but wired, carrying tension in your shoulders or struggling to relax. New or worrying physical symptoms should be medically assessed.
A practical approach, tailored to what is happening in your life.
Our work starts with your experience, rather than a fixed formula. Different methods may be useful for different people.
Give yourself some breathing room.
Sessions can combine a structured conversation about your goals with guided relaxation and hypnosis. You remain involved in agreeing what we focus on, and the aim is to make space for calmer reflection and helpful next steps.
Notice patterns. Practise alternatives.
Where appropriate, I may suggest exercises such as reframing, anchoring and future pacing to explore responses and mentally rehearse a different approach. NLP has a limited overall evidence base; it is offered transparently as an optional technique.
Find a more balanced perspective.
We do not pretend difficulties are not real. Instead, we can examine unhelpful predictions, recognise what is going reasonably well and consider what is genuinely within your influence, drawing on CBT-informed ideas where suitable.
Careful, realistic expectations. Hypnotherapy may support relaxation and how you approach stress, but it does not remove external pressures or replace medical, psychological or workplace support when these are needed. I do not promise a particular result or number of sessions.
Not “just think happy thoughts”. Something more useful.
If you are stretched by real problems, being told to look on the bright side can feel dismissive.
We can make space for difficult feelings while becoming more curious about the conclusions your mind is drawing. A more constructive question is often, “What would help me handle the next part?” rather than “Why can't I simply stop feeling stressed?”
That might mean recognising a habit of taking responsibility for everything, preparing for a difficult conversation, allowing yourself a break, or noticing times when you have already coped well.
Nothing about this requires you to be cheerful all the time. It asks only whether a different perspective might give you more options.
A few grounded ideas for the moments you feel stretched.
These are options, not rules. Choose what feels manageable and adapt them to your situation.
Let your breathing slow.
Find a comfortable position. Breathe gently in through your nose and out through your mouth, without forcing the depth or pace. A few unhurried breaths may help create a moment of space.
Use your surroundings.
Notice the floor under your feet and look for a few things you can see, hear or touch. Grounding can help redirect attention when your thoughts feel crowded.
What is the next useful step?
Instead of solving the entire week in your head, identify one realistic action, conversation or boundary. Make it small enough that you could begin today.
Build a transition ritual.
Write down unfinished tasks, decide when you will return to them and choose a brief activity that marks the shift into your own time. The routine can be simple and repeatable.
For more on gentle breathing techniques, see the NHS breathing exercises for stress. Stop or adapt an exercise if it makes you uncomfortable.
A clear way to begin, without a prescribed programme.
I will explain the approach, listen to what you would like to change and help you decide whether working together feels appropriate.
Tell me what's happening.
We will discuss the pressures you're experiencing, what you would like to feel different, and any support already in place. You can ask questions without pressure to book sessions.
Choose a helpful focus.
If we decide to proceed, we discuss a flexible plan. This may include solution focused conversation, hypnosis, relaxation and practical strategies you can explore between appointments.
Notice what is useful.
We reflect on your experience, adjust what we are doing and discuss next steps. There is no promise of instant change and no fixed number of sessions.
Hello, I'm Gary.
I'm a Swindon-based psychotherapist and clinical hypnotherapist, offering a collaborative, solution focused way of working.
My role is not to tell you that your life should feel easy. It is to offer a thoughtful space where we can understand what is getting in the way, recognise your existing strengths and explore realistic ways forward.
I work with Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, selected NLP-informed exercises and CBT-informed ideas where appropriate. We'll talk about the purpose and suitability of any approach before using it.

Can hypnotherapy help me manage everyday stress?
Hypnotherapy may provide a setting for relaxation, focused attention and reflection. Together we can explore how you respond to pressures and practise coping strategies. Experiences vary, so I cannot promise a specific outcome or number of sessions.
What is the difference between relaxation and stress management?
Relaxation is one part of the work. Stress management can also involve recognising patterns, setting realistic boundaries, approaching difficult thoughts differently and practising small changes between appointments.
How do you use NLP for stress?
Where appropriate, I may introduce NLP-informed exercises such as reframing, anchoring or future pacing to help you reflect on habits and rehearse responses. The evidence for NLP as a comprehensive treatment approach is limited, and I will explain any technique before we use it.
Will you just tell me to think positively?
No. Positive thinking here means developing a balanced, more useful perspective, not dismissing worry, grief, workload, financial problems or other genuine sources of pressure. We consider what you can influence and what support you may need.
Can we explore stress caused by work, family or caring responsibilities?
Yes. Our conversation can focus on how these pressures affect you and the practical changes you would find helpful. Therapy cannot remove unreasonable demands at work or home, but it can sit alongside appropriate workplace, social or other support.
How many appointments will I need?
There is no fixed programme and no guaranteed timeframe. After a free initial consultation, we can discuss the approach, costs and whether sessions feel appropriate. We review progress together as we go.
Do you offer online stress management appointments?
Yes. Appointments can be arranged in Swindon or online across the UK, where suitable. You will need a private, comfortable place and a reliable connection for an online session.
When should I seek medical or other specialist support?
If stress is persistent, affecting everyday functioning, or causing concerning physical or mental health symptoms, speak with your GP or an appropriate healthcare professional. For urgent mental health support use NHS 111; if someone is in immediate danger call 999. Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical assessment or crisis care.
You don't have to have everything worked out before we talk.
We can start with what feels difficult today and consider whether hypnotherapy and practical stress-management support are the right fit for you.
Please avoid sharing sensitive health information in your initial booking note or email. You can discuss a suitable way to communicate privately.
