01 / Understanding exam nerves
You've prepared. But the pressure can still feel enormous.
You can care deeply about doing well without wanting fear to dominate the experience.
For some people, stress begins weeks before an exam. For others, it appears at the classroom door, during a timed assessment or the moment they are asked a question. You might overthink every answer, compare yourself with others or struggle to switch off after studying.
Exam nerves are common, and their causes vary. We can explore what happens for you, the strengths you already have and the practical changes you would like to make.
02 / Different situations, individual support
Important moments come in many forms.
Whether the challenge is academic, professional or practical, we'll start with your own experience rather than a one-size-fits-all programme.
GCSEs, A levels & assessments
From revision pressure and mock exams to worries about grades, we can talk about how to approach preparation and exam day with greater confidence.
University exams & dissertations
Support for concentration worries, coursework deadlines, presentations, viva-style assessments and perfectionism around academic performance.
Qualifications, OSCEs & assessments
For adults preparing for professional qualifications, clinical assessments, workplace accreditation and career progression.
Interviews & presentations
Help exploring self-doubt, public speaking nerves, overthinking and preparing to communicate clearly under pressure.
Driving tests & practical exams
For learners concerned about test conditions, observations and making mistakes. Practical instruction and preparation remain essential.
Music exams, auditions & performance
Explore confidence, anticipation and attention for performers, musicians, speakers and people facing an important assessment.
03 / Your therapeutic approach
A supportive way to work with pressure, thoughts and confidence.
We explore what helps you feel prepared, grounded and more able to approach a challenge in your own way.
Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy may be used to explore focused relaxation, confidence, preferred responses and mental rehearsal. NLP techniques may be introduced to explore language, perspective, imagery and personal confidence cues.
Where helpful, CBT-informed elements can support practical reflection on worrying predictions, expectations, revision routines and the steps within your control.
I'll explain the techniques we discuss, check they're suitable for you and make space for your questions. This work is intended to complement preparation and appropriate educational or healthcare support, not guarantee grades or test results.
04 / Preparing with perspective
Useful habits can start well before exam day.
The best preparation often combines practical planning with a kinder, more flexible response to pressure.
Build a manageable plan
Break work into realistic sessions, allow for breaks and check what you understand instead of only counting study hours.
Practise the situation
Where suitable, try practice questions, timed papers or rehearsal with your teacher, tutor or trainer so the format becomes more familiar.
Make room for recovery
Protect sleep, meals, movement and time away from revision. These are part of preparation, not wasted time.
Respond to the inner critic
Notice the difference between “I want to prepare well” and “I must be perfect”. Choose a more balanced, useful way to talk to yourself.
Independent advice: The NHS exam preparation guide offers practical ideas about revision, rest and self-care.
05 / Young people, parents & carers
Exam stress can affect the whole family.
Young people deserve to feel listened to, not defined by their results.
Support for younger students begins with a conversation about their circumstances, preferences, age and suitability. Where appointments are appropriate, we discuss safeguarding, consent, confidentiality and involvement of a parent or carer.
Schools and colleges can offer additional help. If a young person is struggling, talk with their teacher, pastoral support team or GP. Some students may qualify for formal exam access arrangements; these are assessed and arranged by the relevant education provider or awarding body, not by a hypnotherapist.
NHS guidance for parents about exam stress and official exam access-arrangements information are helpful starting points.
Ways to support a student
- Listen without turning every conversation into revision
- Help create a realistic plan with downtime
- Talk about wellbeing as well as outcomes
- Encourage school or college support early
- Ask about an individual suitability conversation before booking therapy
Under-16 concessionary rates are advertised on the published fees page; clinical suitability and safeguarding take priority over eligibility for a discount.
06 / A straightforward place to start
Support should feel clear, personal and unhurried.
You can ask questions and make an informed choice before deciding to continue.

Exam & performance confidence FAQs
Answers to some common questions before arranging an initial conversation.
Can hypnotherapy help me feel more confident about exams?
Gary offers Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy as one way to explore relaxation, confidence and coping strategies around assessment situations. The approach is tailored to you; no particular grade, result or change in symptoms can be promised.
How does NLP fit into exam confidence work?
Where appropriate, Gary may use NLP-informed visualisation, language reframing and confidence anchors to practise a more useful response to anticipated situations. These are tools within an individual plan, not a replacement for revision or specialist care.
Do you include CBT-informed strategies?
Yes. Depending on your needs, conversations may draw on CBT-informed techniques such as noticing unhelpful predictions, checking expectations, planning manageable tasks and practising helpful responses. This does not mean the sessions are a complete specialist CBT course.
What if my mind goes blank during a test?
We can discuss what happens before and during assessments, explore strategies for slowing down and orienting yourself, and develop a realistic plan for preparation and test day. Exam techniques, rest and revision remain important.
Can you support GCSE and A-level students under 16?
Enquiries about younger clients are welcomed subject to age, suitability, safeguarding and appropriate parent or carer involvement. We will discuss consent, confidentiality, session format and any additional school or healthcare support before starting.
What if my exam is only a few days away?
A free consultation can help us consider the time available and which practical options are appropriate. If an appointment is possible, no immediate improvement or result is guaranteed. Prioritise adequate rest, revision plans and your teacher or tutor’s guidance.
Can you help with driving tests, interviews and auditions?
Yes, we can talk about performance confidence across different situations. For driving tests, professional driving instruction and safety requirements remain essential; your session is not a substitute for practical training.
How many sessions would I need?
There is no fixed programme or promised number of sessions. We discuss your aims, suitability, progress and preferences together, and you are free to stop or seek other support at any time.
Are appointments available online throughout the UK?
Where clinically appropriate, appointments are available by video across the United Kingdom. In-person sessions are based in Swindon, with enquiries welcomed from the surrounding area.
How much do sessions cost?
The initial consultation is free. The published standard session fee is £75, with a £65 rate for under-16s and other listed concession groups. Fees and eligibility should be confirmed at booking. See the current fees and concessions.
