Understanding trypanophobia
When a routine appointment feels anything but routine.
Needle phobia can affect how you feel before, during and even after medical appointments.
You may worry about a vaccination, a blood test, cannulas, the sensation of an injection or the possibility of fainting. Some people feel uncomfortable only at the appointment; others find the anticipation disrupts sleep or influences whether they seek medical care.
There is no single experience of needle phobia. Your concerns might involve pain, previous medical experiences, a loss of control or simply feeling overwhelmed.
It can affect more than appointments
People sometimes postpone tests, avoid booking procedures, rely on reassurance or become distressed when an appointment approaches.
If fear is delaying important healthcare, tell your GP or medical team. They can discuss practical adjustments and suitable psychological support.
Ask about a consultationUnderstanding your reactions
Needle phobia can affect people in different ways.
Your experience may involve anxious thoughts, physical sensations, previous appointments or worries about what might happen. Understanding these reactions can help us explore appropriate support.
Anticipatory anxiety
Knowing that an injection, vaccination or blood test is approaching can cause significant worry. For some people, the days leading up to an appointment are especially difficult.
Dizziness or fainting
Some people feel light-headed or faint around needles. This may involve a vasovagal response, which is not the same as anxiety alone and may need specific precautions.
Previous experiences
A difficult medical procedure or upsetting experience can influence how safe someone feels during later appointments. Others cannot identify a single event that started the fear.
Avoiding healthcare
Needle phobia may lead to postponed blood tests, vaccinations or other healthcare. Avoidance can bring short-term relief but make future appointments more daunting.
What if you have fainted before?
Tell the healthcare professional before your next injection or blood test if you have previously fainted. They can discuss suitable precautions.
Applied tension is sometimes recommended for people with needle-related fainting. It differs from ordinary relaxation and should be discussed with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. Therapy does not replace medical advice or necessary care.
A supportive approach
Understanding your fear and exploring a way forward.
The starting point is understanding your experience and what you would like to be different.
At Best Mind Therapy, I offer an individual and collaborative approach to discussing needle phobia, helping you explore how the fear affects your everyday life.
My work draws on Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, therapeutic conversations and other appropriate techniques, which we can discuss during your initial consultation.
We may explore anxious expectations, practical preparation for appointments, emotional responses and ways of working towards realistic personal goals.
If you experience fainting, have complex medical concerns or require another form of specialist treatment, we'll discuss whether additional professional support would be appropriate.

Listening first
Discuss your concerns at a pace that feels appropriate, without assumptions or judgement.
Understanding your goals
Identify what you would like to be different and which situations matter most to you.
Exploring options
Discuss therapeutic approaches, their limitations and other relevant forms of support.
Reviewing progress
Consider what is useful, review how you feel and adjust the approach when appropriate.
Understanding your treatment options
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), often including gradual exposure, is an established treatment approach for specific phobias.
The evidence for hypnotherapy as a treatment for specific phobias is more limited. We can discuss the approaches available, their limitations and whether an alternative treatment or referral may better meet your needs.
Therapeutic support is not a substitute for medical assessment, necessary procedures or advice from your healthcare team.

More about GaryQuestions and practical information
Answers before your first appointment.
Do I need to look at needles during therapy?
There is no automatic requirement to look at needles during a hypnotherapy session. Any suggested exercise would be discussed with you in advance. Where graded exposure is indicated, we can discuss accessing an appropriately qualified CBT professional.
What if I faint during injections?
Tell your medical team. Some people with needle phobia experience a vasovagal response, and NHS guidance describes applied tension as a possible technique for certain people. Seek individual guidance rather than assuming standard relaxation is right for fainting.
Can I have online sessions?
Yes, online consultations are offered across the UK, subject to suitability and a private, reliable connection. In-person sessions are available in Swindon.
What if a blood test or vaccination is due soon?
Contact the healthcare team arranging the procedure. They may be able to discuss positioning, breaks or other adjustments. A therapy consultation should not delay necessary medical care.
How many sessions will I need?
That varies with individual needs and the approach agreed. We'll review your progress, and no result or number of sessions can be guaranteed.
Do you offer a free initial consultation?
Yes. You can discuss your concerns and ask about the service before deciding whether to proceed.
Can parents enquire for a child?
Yes, enquiries about younger clients can be discussed. Suitability, the child's age, consent, parental involvement and safeguarding are considered before offering appointments.
Where can I see the fees?
Current appointment pricing and terms are available on the fees page.
